Numb - Max Cooper Collaboration- Conditions two EP..

Im excited about this collaboration with Max. His Conditions Two EP was released last week and out on the Fields label.  The video was made by Germanys’ Henning Lederer, and is out today..

So, last December I left my Glastonbury hideout to return to London and meet with Max about working together in the future.  We drank tea, talked about gigs, touring, science and music.  I left Max with a couple of melodies and within 24hours he’d sent the first draft of Numb and Falling into Recursive Spaces. I’m looking forward to making the journey to Max’s North London studio again soon, we may have some more tunes in the pipeline…

Max is touring though May/June with label mates, The Slow Revolt and Ghosting Season   as part of the Fields Label tour starting in Brighton on May the 10th - full tour details here

Soul Partizan Launch 17th May - London

A few months ago i was asked by the director of Soul Partizan if i knew any good bands and djs to program for a new live music night in London.

The answer was a HUGE- yes I do!

After a little begging and bribing,  some of my favourite artists will be performing on the 17th of May to mark the launch the Soul Partizans events.

It’s a monthly night focusing primarily on promoting independent artists and labels, both UK and abroad.  Expect a night of eclectic and interesting music from talented people.

To start the live show I wanted to showcase some exceptional vocalists and musicians in a part of the night called Introducing 3 in 30..

Alice Haughton of The May BirdsHarleighblu and Tom Reed will perform stripped back acoustic 10minute sets, followed by full live sets from Natural Self (Tru Thoughts),  Lea Lea (Wah Wah 45s) and Miniature Cities..

The venue closes at 3am, so from midnight DJ Vadim with maybe a vocal guest or two, and Rodger Cary Grant will take us to the close..

The Venue:  The Cave, Farringdon Lane EC1R 3AJ, come and join us, let’s support these musicians and keep it going!!

Loving Natural Self’s album Neon Hurts My Eyes released 10th March 2013 out on Tru Thoughts Records..

Lea Lea signing with Wah Wah 45s is exciting news, check out her music here and videos here!

Miniature Cities are experimenting with some new tracks for us, check out their music here

DJ Vadims new album Don’t B Scared can be heard here and mixes here

And if you can’t make the gig then tune into Hoxton Radio here, the nights music will be streamed live!

Enjoy x

Last week Belleruche and DJ RSN played 3 Greek cities, Athens- Larissa-Thessaloniki..

The sun was a blazing as we arrived in Athens so we joined the tourists at the Acropolis before the show.

Dj RSN joined our set and stood in for Dj Modest and we were supported by his new project featuring a fine vocalist, Esterina. Esterina has one of those powerful voices with buckets of soul and hints of Etta James, Rosin Murphy and PJ Harvey. We had a great time, the train journeys flew by in great company..  Thanks to all who came to the shows, I’m looking forward to another visit in the summer..

BBC Maida Vale session, Kathrin deBoer and Aaron Jerome aka SBTRKT.

Happy New Year one and all, slow off the mark, I know, what cha gonna do eh!?

I wanted to look back for just one last time before I fill these ‘pages’ with new collaborations and exciting forward focused news and adventures…

So after a random meeting late last year,  a BBC Maida Vale session that had slipped deep into the ether found it’s way into my hands.  It’s a track I wrote with Aaron for his debut album, Time to Rearrange.  An album that arrived and perhaps disappeared a little too quickly in my opinion..

Time to Rearrange was one ambitious debut orchestrated by Aaron, fellow collaborators included the immense talents of Bajka, Andreya Triana, Yungun AKA Essa, Simpiwe Dana, Sabira Jade, Voice, and Moses.

I wanted to share it with you..

Listen to the track here

And here’s a video of Aaron chatting about the album..

Lovely memories, enjoy x

Ross of Part Time Heros AKA Frankson, has remixed Wasted Time from our album Rollerchain, it’s been feeling the love from Mr Peterson on BBC Radio 6.

Big up to Radio 6 Djs for playing tracks from Rollerchain and also for keeping the airwaves eclectic, interesting and championing independent labels.

Despite the digital age and it’s countless ways to introduce us to new and old music, radio still beholds an enormous influence over a musicians access to the masses.  The digital radio in my kitchen flits between stations from London French Radio to Purple Radio, the analogue radio tunes into various pirate stations where broadcasters are doing a fine job of supporting grassroot music.

There is something that I do grapple with, I am bemused as to why pirate radio station operators are prosecuted as criminals. If ‘caught’ unlicensed broadcasters are subject to a 5year broadcasting suspension, up to £5000 fine and up to 3 years in prison, these sanctions are akin to GBH..  Can anyone tell me why are the airwaves are exempt from free speech?

For whatever reason I think it’s tragic and at the detriment to music culture. It was Gilles peterson himself who cut his teeth on pirate radio before making his mark and contribution to the UK and worldwide musical community.

After being chased out of two Parisian parks by surly park wardens on a beautiful and sunny day, we set up for a live session in a back street, yep, us, the soul kitchen crew and garbage collection trucks..

A few weeks before the session, Ricky F and I had began pulling apart some of the Rollerchain tracks and started to play them acoustically.  Much of Rollerchain started this way so experimenting with tempo and re-harmonising carried on after the red books were in Tru Thoughts’ hands.   I think i might almost prefer this version over the album recording, i like it’s spontaneity and the space it gives the lyrics and melody.

To hear the original version clicksy yourself here and scroll through DjModests sampler mix of Rollerchain.  It’s our fourth release on Tru-Thoughts records, released on the 7th May this year.

The follow-up tour is being sorted now, for up to to date news keep connected through  Belleruche.com or our Facebook page.

And heads up- for our next London show we are playing a full live show at the Kentish Town HMV Forum, 27th of October..

Merci Soul Kitchen, see more live sessions in numerous and random Parisian locations here

For about three years I toured with the Bonobo band on the Days To Come tour. Above is a sneaky desk recording from one of my last shows with Bonobo.  T’was a performance of The Keeper, the first single to Simon Green and Andreya Trianas’ album Black Sands,  released on Ninja Tune in 2010.
After a last minute rehearsal and call to step in for the d’lovely Ms Triana, the show was just one part of a magical night on the Big Chill Castle stage.   I’ve many fond memories from the Big Chill and on this particular night the Castle stage got it totally right.  The crowd, the bands and the combination there of, made for one of those electric nights, I think some of that energy has been captured on the recording.
Kathrin deBoer Bonobo
The line up read like this; Mulatu and the Heliocentrics, Bonobo, Quantic and his Combaro Barbaro, The Matthew Herbert Orchestra featuring Eska and to close the stage Mr Scruff.

The live band line-up also features on the Bonobo Live at Koko DVD and is available on Ninja tune, with previews a plenty on Youtube..
The full live band featured- The Killer Horns, Jack Baker, Ewan Wallace, Andy Wilkins, Ben Cooke, Jote Oshan, Wayne Urquhart, Mike Simmonds, Simon Little and of course Simon Green.

But alas, as many good things unfortunately end, this year the Big Chill closed its gates..
RIP Big Chill, hugs and thank you for the memories.

Nickodemus’ 3rd album ‘Moon People’ was released on WONDERWHEEL Recordings last month.  The single, Moon People,  was released on the 12th of June and features New Yorkers, The Real Live Show and myself.

An album sampler is here, featuring Afrika Bambaataa, and Navegante  to namecheck but a few..  Remixes by Nu-Mark are coming soon, and more album info and artist links here!

The vocals for Moon People and Peaceful Island Life were recorded at a late night session by Nickodemus’ good friend, producer Simbad. By morning the finished tracks were back in our inboxs’ and on their way to a mastering studio in NYC.

We caught up last week at the heaving Adidas Do-Over street party in Shoreditch.  After a jam over Julio Bashmores- Au Seve,  the mic was handed over to MCs and eventually ended up in the hands of Damian Marley, a fine night thanks to Boglewaltz - for photos of the party click here.

Nicodemus is currently touring Europe and due back in the States in September- to catch up with him and hear latest news hit him up on the ole facebook

Ok, Jack Baker and TM Juke trio… now boys, where is the follow up to Boto and The Second Liners?

Yes,  we know life gets busy..  but your people are waiting no?

Listen again to The Jack Baker and TM Juke trios’ debut album here,  featuring Andreya Triana, Alice Russell, Gecko Turner et moi..
Now in the mean time Jack Baker has his production hat firmly stuck on and is making some heavy beats for the formidable talent that is LeaLea Jones.  With Horace Andy featuring on their debut album, keep an eye on this one, Ms Jones has a lot to say and has the beats to back it up.

Black is the Night was one of my first collaborations released in the UK.  Dj Vadim heard Belleruches’ first 45, released on our own label- Hippoflex Recording Industries, and through a somewhat convoluted chain of events one evening I headed over to deep East London to a basement studio where Black Is the Night was written and recorded.

The Soundcatcher album was released on BBE Records in 2008 preceding a UK and European tour.  Looking back I think this was a very special project to be involved in, with Abstract Rude, Sena, Emo, Big Red and Deuce Eclipse to namecheck a few.

The video was made and produced by Monsieur Zupika and Przemystaw Adamski..

And if you missed the album, hear more here:

The lyrics,  written whilst Vadim made tea;

Slumber take me down, take me down under,

romance me with dream, occupy my mind let time

Drift away in sleep, too much to do while awake

let me catch up with you, slumber charm me

Mind will drift away, carry me down

Let me say and do, anything ild like to

Where nothing is impossible and nothing’s a chore

Nothing ever stays the same and never a bore

Black is the night, black is all I see

some starry lights, are shining down on me

Convinced by this night, convinced by the sea

Ild like to let you know how im feeling.

Let shyness be gone, let courage roar loud

let your words lift me up and let them make you proud

While the purpose is clear, there’s work to be done

Taken in your stride, let it come, let it come

put force into nothing give grief to no one

let rivers  run smooth, let them run for everyone

As morning creeps, lights up my room

dreams drawn away to bring the promise of the new day

Black is the night…
